Sram EX1 is the world’s first drivetrain system specifically developed for the unique demands of the E-MTB. Forget ‘the more, the merrier’, the important question is not how many gears, but how wide is your gear range, because it is a wider ratio that gives you the ability to take on steep climbs and save battery life. Ex1 has a gear range of 436 % – an enormous ratio spread over just eight gears, an average of 30% difference between each gear. With standard cassettes on e-bikes you need to shift more frequently and faster due to the rapid acceleration. Conventional drivetrains, under the load of the motor and because of double shifts and cross-chaining can cause snapped chains and excess wear. Limited gear ratio affects how E-MTBs climb and impacts on their battery life. The SRAM EX1 groupset comes with X-SYNC chainrings with wide-narrow tooth profile. 14, 16 and 18-tooth sprockets for Bosch motors and 34-tooth chainrings for Brose and Yamaha mid-drive motors.

The XDURO hardtail model with the Bosch PowerTube battery now features the brand new Modular Rail System, which allows riders to fix an external Bosch PowerPack (with another 500 Wh) onto the already integrated battery, bringing the XDURO up to a not-insignificant 1,000 Wh capacity. S-pedelecs can reach up to 45 km/h. Legally (in Germany), S-pedelecs are not bicycles, but mopeds. The driver must provide an insurance license and must have at least one driving license. Unlike the pedelecs, there is a helmet requirement for the S-pedelecs. Bike paths must not be used and no children’s seats or trailers may be installed. Because of higher speeds the frames must be more stable and the brakes more powerful.Magnum Peak / Canada – 90NM 500w geared hub @48V, 27.5″ x 2.25, 24 Speed 3×8 Shimano Altus Front M310, Shimano Acera M360 Rear, 11-32T cassette, 28-33-42T chainring, 9 Mosfet controller max 18A, Tektro Auriga Hydraulic Disc with 180 mm Front Rotor and 160 mm Rear Rotor. A truly powerful motor that doesn’t care what gear you’re in, won’t strain your drivetrain and can be operated with throttle on demand whereas most mid-drives cannot. SmartMotion Catalyst New Zealand Dapu 500w geared hub (900w peak) @48V, Kenda Kadre, 27.5″ x 2.2″ (650x54B) , 1×10 SRAM Gx 11-42T, Magura MT4 Hydraulic Disc with 180 mm Rotors, Alexrims DP23 36 Hole, Stainless Steel spokes 14G Front 13G Rear. Considering the bike is capable of higher speeds and off-road the high capacity battery is a nice option (air resistance adds up quickly above 20 mph). Assist level can switch between cadence or torque mode! Torque sensing assist is more responsive and natural, complimenting your legs in how it outputs power instead of just blasting on and off… on and off. The motor is a 500 watt geared hub design made by Dapu, one of my favorite motor designers. It’s not as efficient or powerful as some mid-drive motors but you have access to full power no matter which gear you’re in and won’t wear the chain and sprockets as quickly. Because this ebike uses a hub motor vs. mid-drive your shifting is not changed or overpowered so the chain and sprockets should last longer, you also get full power and top speed performance regardless of what gear you’re in. Given the potential for higher speed riding and some off-road use with bumps I’d consider adding a seat post suspension. Look for one with 30.4 mm diameter to fit properly and keep in mind that it will raise the minimum seat height three to four inches. Something like the 27.2 mm Thudbuster ST with their 27.2 to 30.4 mm shim adapter could work very well, delivering a more full-suspension feel that would take the edge off of longer rides without changing geometry too much.
